Top 10 Incoming Freshmen

Every year our High School coaches are watching to see who will be coming into WIAA to make some waves.  There are plenty of unknowns in this Freshmen Class, from the weights the standouts will wrestle to how things will shake out in the end.  Adding to the intrigue, this class features a fleet of extraordinary wrestlers who have already spent time in the fire through Middle School, Kids Nationals and Washington National Dual Teams.  Needless to say there's a lot of talent and experience in this group that should lead to strong performances from a number of these guys next year and many years to come.

1:  106 Isaiah Gonzalez – Pasco HS:

Isaiah will not disappoint, as his technique is superior and will grow into a super 106.  Isaiah is a WSWA multiple Freestyle and Greco State Champion, prior Schoolboy National Team member with some impressive victories…  While 106 this year will be a tough weight, look for Isaiah to score some big points for Pasco.

2:  138 Riley Van Scoy – Stanwood HS:

There's little doubt that Van Scoy is coming into this season as one of the most successful Freshman, he is big, athletic, aggressive and has true desire to improve.  With rock solid results at Schoolboy Duals in Indianapolis and Nationals in Wisconsin where he received All-American Status.  That doesn't mean he'll necessarily be the most productive, he will be battling some tough opponents at 138 this year.

3:  113 Aizayah Yacapin – Curtis HS:

Like Robby Vaughn, Yacapin wasn’t on the National Circuit this year but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t training with some impressive results during this offseason at West Regionals and Freestyle/Greco WSWA state tournament.  ‘Maka’ is a smart wrestler, who’s good in all positions… this kid does not lose often.

4:  113 Robby Vaughn -  Chiawana HS:

Robby brings speed and athletic ability to the Pasco lower weights.  Robby wasn’t on the national circuit this year which hurt Team Washington in some areas, his Greco and Freestyle ability are proven with big wins over Haiden Drury and Jaden Cassel both noted incoming Freshmen.  Look for Robby to be on the podium in Tacoma in February 2017.

5:  138 Weston Lyver – Buckley HS:

Lyver is fundamentally sound and betrays very few holes in his game.  He has a solid reputation as a freestyle/Greco specialist with an outstanding performance this year in Indianapolis, look for Weston to knock off some of those upper classmen in 2A.

6:  220 Dustyn Camacho – O’Dea HS:

Camacho brings star power to O’Dea as a Freshman, dominating the National scene this summer look for Dustyn to bring the Camacho Special to a neighborhood near you.  Being our heaviest top 10 incoming Freshman Dustyn will be battling upper classmen putting him at a disadvantage when it comes to strength however with his solid technique and ability to take advantage of mistakes look for Dustyn to be battling Will Willsey in the finals.

7:  182 Braxton Mikesell – Central Valley HS:

Mikesell turned in a very strong post season year with a style that seemed tailor-made for the High School upper weights.  Winning the covenanted Triple Crown, setting world records in weightlifting in both Deadlift and Bench-press.  Look for Braxton to make noise in the upper weights this High School season.

8:  106 Ryan Wheeler – Curtis

Ryan has put in a lot of time this off-season working on his craft.  With some impressive victories at Reno Worlds and participation in National Team Camps and Cadet Duals Ryan has faced some tough opponents to prepare him for High School season.

9:  106 Kyler Romero - Toppenish

Solid wrestler with tough workout partners in the wrestling room, look for him to surprise many spectators this season. With a desire to wrestle the best and a positive can-do attitude this little guy will be someone coaches can turn to when the going gets tough.

10:  126 Strann Seeman – Colville HS:

A new kid on the block from Montana, Strann brings to the mat an Iowa Attack Style of wrestling.  Technique may not be his strong suit however his attitude and aggressive style of wrestling has turned the heads of many spectators; if Strann can stay in shape for 6 minutes he will be a big point scorer for the Indians this year.

Dark-horse picks:

These are the kids some may consider underrated or overlooked however if the right combination occurs these guys will find themselves on the podium in Tacoma.

Chase Randall - Mead

Jaden Cassel - Tacoma

Ray Aranda -

Gabe Hawthorne – Buckley
